Greetings from Gravatt!

For most of my adolescent and adult life, Gravatt has been a second home. During my years on summer staff, the tall pines and the joyful bustle of camp life greeted me each May. It was a place where I could recharge spiritually and be accepted for my authentic self. Gravatt’s ability to nurture that sense of belonging is a true reflection of the community we’ve built together.

Whether it’s sharing a meal, singing by the campfire, enjoying a s’more, or sipping coffee by the fireplace in Stewart Hall with Father Byrd, Gravatt reminds us to slow down and appreciate the simple things in life. These genuine experiences make this place special and are what we strive to share with guests throughout the year. It is an honor to help extend that same sense of community and welcome to everyone who visits our Holy Grounds.

When I rejoined the team this April, it felt like riding a bike. The same beloved buildings, some with fresh new interiors, the familiar faces, and the strong sense of community all welcomed me back. Since my earlier years here, I have spent time in Texas at a retreat center for youth with special medical needs and in North Carolina at another Episcopal camp and conference center. Those experiences broadened my understanding of this work and gave me a wide range of ideas to draw from when facing new challenges. Sometimes a different perspective helps reveal a better way forward.

One of my favorite professional sayings has always been, “Work smarter, not harder.” At Gravatt, I think it is more fitting to say, “Work smarter, and harder.” The team we have today is filled with people who care deeply about their work and about this community. Their dedication shows in every detail, whether they are preparing for a summer of campers ready for adventure or hosting quilters seeking rest and renewal. It is through both thoughtful planning and hard work that we create these meaningful experiences for everyone who comes here.

Looking ahead, there is much to be excited about. Renovations to Bishop Cole Lodge are underway to improve our facilities. We are welcoming new team members who embody Gravatt’s spirit of service and hospitality. Most importantly, we remain committed to greeting each guest who entrusts us with their precious time. That, truly, is the greatest honor.
